When the going gets tough…

The tough get going! That’s according to National Electronics Week Event Director, Claire Jeffreys, who claims that the show has a critical role to play in the UK electronics industry’s recovery. Here, she tells us why she believes the show is the perfect antidote to today’s economic challenges.

Claire Jeffries“We all know that times are tough right now – there’s really no getting away from it. But, that’s all the more reason to visit and exhibit at National Electronics Week.

It’s simply the best value for everyone looking for sales leads and networking opportunities; which is why so many in the industry have embraced all that NEW represents – both as a cost-effective marketing opportunity for exhibitors and as a great use of visitors’ time, jam-packed with free educational opportunities.

Having endured a depressed marketplace for some time now, we’re seeing some extremely positive signs of growth in the US which will inevitably find their way across the Atlantic.

Most businesses are now wise to this, realising that there are gains to be made just around the corner. And those who have not taken their eye off the ball when it comes to marketing their business will surely prosper.

That’s why, here at NEW, we’re committed to serving the whole industry comprehensively, providing as many opportunities as possible for the widest range of market sectors. However, to set the record straight once and for all; NEW is, and always will be, a show created for the production industry.

As many in the industry will know, I have worked in this market for many years and took the decision to introduce a new event in 2007 – a leap of faith which I’m pleased to say was backed by many production professionals. I took this decision because I believed we deserved better. The result was the launch of a business forum I’m extremely proud of, a business forum with the power to unite the industry in good times and bad.

By combining the show, we’ve been able to target visitor numbers in their thousands – a tactic which has paid off with unprecedented pre-registration figures. Right now, we’ve got over 1,800 relevant visitors signed up to attend – with a significantly higher proportion expected over the course of the three days at London’s Earls Court 2.

Of this number, around a quarter say they’re looking to buy ‘now’, ‘in the next 6 months’ or ‘in the next 6-12 months’. A majority of pre-registered visitors have reported an interest in using the show to evaluate capital equipment while a significant number will be using the show to make their final purchase decision. Sure signs of a pending recovery, NEW is clearly positioned as the focus for a number of visitors with spending in mind.

Value-driven learning and discovery – the sky’s the limit!

Value really is the name of the game at NEW 2009. We’ve put together a comprehensive educational schedule, with three seminar programmes running throughout every day of the show. At the heart of this year’s exhibition is our inaugural Electronics Weekly Live design conference, providing a dynamic technical marketing platform for semiconductor suppliers, distributors and test firms.

Supported by Envirowise and the IET, the event will highlight new product technologies and key design methodologies across markets including wireless, security, transportation, medical and defence. Seminar topics will include industry issues such as power management in digital processing systems, choosing the right wireless standard for your design, and how Linux is changing the cost model for embedded design.

The 2009 show will also see us introducing the Design Innovation Conference, a unique opportunity for visitors to get to grips with advanced PCB technologies and explore design considerations beyond the PCB.

Presentations will include Analytical Edge’s Robert Easson talking signal integrity issues in high-speed PCBs, Polar Instruments’ Martyn Gaudion taking a design perspective on PCB line losses, Stokes Research Institute’s Jeff Punch on thermal management at the PCB level and Premier EDA’s Alan Johnson on intermediate PCB design techniques.

Completing our trio of technical programmes, our State-of-the-ART seminars will be run in conjunction with the team at Advanced Rework Technology. Delivered by some of the industry’s leading names including IMAPS, AFDEC, SENTA and the IET, the seminar schedule will cover topics such as lean innovation, the value of user insight in the innovation process and routes to registration. The feature will also enable NEW attendees to take part in a Business Link seminar surgery, shedding light on available funding and business strategies to help attendees meet the challenges of the current economic climate.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Bloodhound SSC…

Continuing the theme of learning and discovery, other highlights include a showcase of Bloodhound SSC – the latest supersonic contender for the land speed record. Led by Richard Noble who previously broke the world land speed record in the Thrust 2 jet car, Bloodhound SSC is the fastest, most advanced and highest technology car ever built.

Richard and his team are bringing a model of the car to the show, along with its EJ200 Eurofighter jet engine and exciting video footage of the SSC in action. There will be opportunities to meet team members and discuss the project which goes into build this autumn. Richard will be opening the show with a highly anticipated keynote speech while holder of the world land speed record and Bloodhound SSC driver, Andy Green, will be on stand signing autographs and taking questions.

Don’t get left behind. It’s your show!

What’s more, we’re being joined by some of the industry’s leading players including Accelonix, Adaptsys, ETek Europe, Juki, PM Tech, TRI, TSL, Testworks, Wilson Process Systems and Zen Production. Showcasing new and proven products and services, there will be so much to see on the show floor – it will be difficult to know where to start! Centrally located and easy to access by road, rail and air, NEW is completely free to attend with recession-busting exhibitor prices. Put simply, it’s an invaluable marketing opportunity for visitors and exhibitors alike – can you afford to turn it down?

The saying is true, when the going gets tough, the tough really do get going. Now is the time to market aggressively, to keep up with your competitors and show customers your business is fighting fit. We want to show the world exactly how much the UK has to offer and, with your support, we will!”
